The Australian government has announced a new scheme to distribute the migrant population from its major cities like Melbourne and Sydney. Furthermore, the beneficiaries will be regional areas of the country.

A NEW SCHEME

This scheme also has a list of 117 occupations which the skilled migrants can select for working and living in the Northern Territories. The norm is to stay there for three years and avail an offer of the pathway to Permanent Residency in Australia. These 117 occupations offer a wide range of work to do. The Designation Area Migration Agreements –DAMA scheme was announced for two Australian regions:
  • Warrnambool of Victoria
  • The Northern Territory
There was a labor shortage in both areas and a need for population increase also. The agreement for Northern Territory, DAMA II will into effect from Jan 1, 2019. It also offers a pathway to seek Permanent Residency.

Using the migration program

David Coleman, Immigration Minister, said DAMA II serves as the example of Government using a migration program to the benefit of specific locations. The Government has the aim of improving immigration programs, to match with the needs of regions, territories, and state. Additionally, the Australians are a priority for filling up jobs, but the immigration system plays an important role in addressing regional skill gaps. The NT witnessed immediate benefits of using DAMA to meet the scarcity of workforce. The Government is happy to continue a partnership with the Government in NT in meeting the skills needs of the local business community. This is true when there are no local workers for filling up these jobs.

Recruiting skilled immigrants

Now the employers can opt for recruiting skilled immigrants when local talents are not available for hire. Moreover, in the near future low skilled migrants who have limited knowledge of English can apply for permanent residency when they live and work in the Northern Territory for three years. These occupations are eligible for concessions in English language and also in Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold. Michael Gunner, the Chief Minister of NT said that adding a pathway to seek permanent residency in DAMA II was a huge incentive to many skilled migrants.

Several benefits

Furthermore, the Government gives priority in jobs to the people of the Territory. Access and retention of skilled workers is a major challenge for employers. Moreover, they need additional workers. The movement of more people to the Territory creates more jobs. This will lead to a significant increase in the number of skilled migrants as the area has a history of overseas migration.  Finally, they contribute towards population growth economic progress, and social diversity.
